¡Viva viernes! (Long live Friday! In other words, TGIF!)
La fecha es el ocho (8) de abril del año dos mil veintidós. (The date is April 8, 2022.)
The Puerto Rican duo Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe paint a picture of the rough conditions of two parallel streets in Ponce, Puerto Rico—Calle Luna Calle Sol. When translated, the street names are “Moon Street” and “Sun Street.”
This song is a great demonstration of the Puerto Rican Spanish accent. Words that are pronounced with the -ao sound at the end are actually words ending in -ado. We hear this in a few key lines, such as the phrase “ten cuidao” (be careful) and “camina pa’lante no mires para el lao” (walk forward, don’t look to the side).
Now it’s time to grab your salsa shoes. ¡Bailemos y cantemos! (Let’s dance and sing!) Go to this link for la letra (the lyrics).
¡Que tengas un viernes vigilante! (May you have an attentive Friday!)
