¡Viva viernes! (Long live Friday! In other words, TGIF!)
La fecha es el siete (7) de abril del año dos mil veintitrés. (The date is April 7, 2023.)
As I long to see my friends and family across the miles, I am sharing a nostalgic cumbia from Colombia’s Lisandro Meza, Lejanía (Distance).
“Cómo extraño mi sabana hermosa metido en la cordillera, esperando que llegue la hora de regresar a mi tierra” (How I miss my beautiful savannah in the mountain range, waiting for the time to return to my land).
“En el Valle de Pubenza me he metido” (I’ve gone to Valle de Pubenza).
“Lejanía que me tiene entristecido” (Distance has me saddened).
“En mi pecho floreció una cumbia de la nostalgia como una lágrima que se escapa” (In my chest flourished a cumbia of nostalgia like a tear that escapes).
“Cumbia del alma” (Cumbia of the soul),
“Cumbia que madruga sobre Pubenza con insistencia buscando a Cauca” (Cumbia that wakes up over Pubenza with insistence looking for Cauca).
“Ay, me da, qué tristeza que me da… la lejanía” (Oh, what sadness the distance gives me).
“Ay, me da, qué tristeza que me da estar tan lejos de la tierra mía” (Oh, what sadness it gives me to be so far from my land).
¡Cantemos y bailemos! (Let’s sing and dance!) Sigamos la letra (Let’s follow the lyrics).
¡Que tengas un viernes vecino! (May you have a nearby Friday!)

A Mexican friend once told me, “We spend all our lives wanting to come to the United States. Then, when we get here, we spend the rest of our lives wanting to go back home.”
I left New York 46 years ago. I will always be a New Yorker. I will always miss New York. I will always dream of going back.
¡Gracias por compartir, Guillermo! I know so many people from different places share those sentiments.
