¡Viva viernes!     (Long live Friday! In other words, TGIF!)

La fecha es el veintinueve (29) de noviembre del año dos mil veinticuatro. (The date is November 29, 2024.)

Susana Baca’s classic María Landó tells the tale of a slave girl in colonial Peru.

“La madrugada estalla como una estatua, como estatua de alas que se dispersan por la ciudad” (The dawn breaks out like a statue, like a statue of wings that scatter through the city).

“Y el mediodía canta campana de agua, campana de agua de oro que nos prohibe la soledad” (And the noon sings a bell of water, a bell of water of gold that prohibits us from loneliness).

“Y la noche levanta su copa larga, su larga copa larga, luna temprana por sobre el mar” (And the night raises its long glass, its long, long glass, early moon over the sea).

“Pero para María no hay madrugada” (But for Maria, there is no dawn).

“Pero para María no hay mediodía” (But for Maria, there is no noon).

“Pero para María ninguna luna alza su copa roja sobre las aguas” (But for Maria, no moon raises its red glass over the water).

“María no tiene tiempo de alzar los ojos” (Maria has no time to raise her eyes),

“María de alzar los ojos rotos de sueño” (Maria, to raise her eyes broken from drowsiness),

“María rotos de sueño de andar sufriendo” (Maria, broken from drowsiness from going on suffering),

“María de andar sufriendo sólo trabaja” (Maria, from going on suffering, she only works),

“María sólo trabaja… y su trabajo es ajeno” (Maria only works… and her work is someone else’s).

¡Cantemos! (Let’s sing!)  Sing along to la letra (the lyrics).

¡Que tengas un viernes vindicativo!     (May you have a defending Friday!)
