Paella is a rice dish that originated in Valencia, Spain. Paella is the Valencian name of the large frying pan with two handles that is used to prepare the dish.

Different regions in Spain make their own variations of paella. I am most familiar with the Andalusian style. I think of Andalusian paella as a grandmother dish to jambalaya.
